about
'THIS IS KARRAKATTA' was conceived on a train. In fact the train tells you exactly where you are, in that bland modern voice that public spaces are blessed with. The train line passes by (and stops at) the very large central Perth cemetery of Karrakatta (which in local Noongar language means ‘place of crabs’), a reclaimed swamp that lots of people are buried in; in fact probably everyone who has lived here for at least a while would know someone interred there. You’d probably only get off at that station if you’re going to the cemetery for whatever reason.
So the song is a kind of response to the idea of the banal possibility of dying exactly where you were born and lived, not kinda getting out, or away, but sort of already on some inevitable downward slide; a birthplace or a homeland can also be an existential trap. Here is your stop..
So, with that in mind, we suggest you get out more….see the world kids!
lyrics
I missed the bus that morning
The sky wet and uncouth
The gait of a cripple
Though my mind was lit with youth
A fine divide between
The evidence and proof
I will not go back and do that again
The train voice autos that
‘This is Karrakatta’
There’s something in it baby
Tells me that it oughtta matter
I see my friend’s ghost rising
Cross the street, above the pines
Connections there hidden
In the ramps, and traps and mines
This is Karrakatta
Mind over matter
This is Karrakatta
My mind over matter
This is Karrakatta
Mind over matter
I don’t wanna die in this town
Train tracks in London
Or a Komodo drowning
I could be there burning in a Ford
Or happy heaped up from a leap
Upon a chrome plate board
This is Karrakatta
Got my mind sunk, heart set
Fishy in a batter
Got me fried up, not yet
Wadjela boy you got your spirit on the fly
If we do this thing right it will be easy on the eye....
It’s all rats and stats
Count the passengers per metre
Consumer satisfaction on the 5G repeater
I’m communing with the dead
Is it war or am I kind?
I see the layers of the onion, but the end has been designed
I could never die in this town
If my parachute is fucked
Leave my teeth on a mountain
The tarot lady told me as a kid
You’ll either be stillborn or still kicking at the lid
This is Karrakatta
Got my mind sunk, heart set
Fishy in a batter
Got me fried up, not yet
Wadjela boy you got your spirit on the fly
If we do this thing right it will be easy on the eye
This is Karrakatta
Mind over matter
This is Karrakatta
My mind over matter
This is Karrakatta
Mind over matter
This is Karrakatta
Got my mind sunk, heart set
Fishy in a batter
Got me fried up, not yet
Wadjela boy you got your spirit on the fly
If we do this thing right it will be easy on the eye

Love the metal tracks on this album, but also lots of other sonic explorations. Static electricity, East West Link also fantastic. Thanks to KGLW for this! Michael B
